The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, has said the Service is fully committed not only to ensuring the safety of all Ghanaians but also maintaining law and order throughout Ghana.
A wave of recent unexplained killings around the country have provoked public outcry, with critics variously blaming the Police Service for failing to guarantee public safety.
One of those killings happened in March this year when unknown assailants entered the private home of Fennec Okyere, manager of controversial hip-life artiste, Kwaw Kesse and stabbed him to death. Till date, no one has been arrested in connection with the murder.
But, the IGP told Citi News on Saturday that personnel of the service are doing their possible best to offer protection for all law-abiding citizens.
“I mentioned it before that we are determined to ensure that the paradigm shift in policing that we announced a year or so ago continues for the betterment of our dear country,” he said.
He went on, “In this present dispensation, we are all aware that law and order is paramount and it must permeate throughout the country and all aspects of our lives. I want to assure you that this is not going to be a nine day wonder.”
The IGP also encouraged the public to assist the police in combating crime by complying with the laws of the State so as to make the work of the Service easier.
His comments came just a day after the Police Administration issued a statement, announcing “a cash reward of Twenty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHc20,000) to any person or persons who will volunteer credible information leading to the arrest of suspects involved in the murder of Fennec Okyere”.
The announcement came as pressure mounts on the Police from both the public and Members of Parliament to do more to bring the Fennec murder probe to a closure by arresting and prosecuting the criminals who planned and executed it.
The Police statement, signed by the Commissioner – Criminal Investigative Department (CID) at the National Police Headquarters, P.K Agblor, also called on persons with information on the killers to “contact the Police on 0302773695, 0302773906, 0302761733 or report to the Public Affairs Directorate at the National Police Headquarters.”
