The political pressure groups planning to picket infront of the Electoral Commission and Parliament, have indicated a change of plan after another meeting with the Police.
The groups; Let My Vote Count, AFAG wrote to the Police, seeking permission to march through some principal streets of Accra and end up at the Electoral Commission (EC) and Parliament House to present a petition on the need to have a new voters register for the 2016 elections.
[contextly_sidebar id=”8SzO5xB6wRtYVY1DKJaxPEirRWX6ZZNB”]The Police made however made moves to secure a restraining order to prevent them from picketing at the two institutions because they are “security zones.”
Though the group had initially vowed to defy the police’s attempts to block them, they have said they will now agree with the police.
The Chairman of AFAG, Nana Ayew Afriyie on Eyewitness News, said: “though their route will not change , it is most likely the proposal by the Police is what the group will go by.”
“We want to make the work much easier for the Police, we want to stay focused on the objective of the day, use the appropriate routes, submit our applications with Parliament, and the Electoral Commission and possibly go to the Hearts park and then we will end it up there,” he added.
He remarked that the group was neither concerned about picketing at either Parliament House and Electoral Commission nor the huge numbers but only interested in ensuring that their concerns are addressed.
“We are sure that the most important thing is to go to bring some issues to the fore and we will be able to achieve that. We are expecting some few hundreds to thousands. We are not mindful of the huge numbers…”
The demonstration is scheduled for September 16, 2015.
