The Ga West Municipal Assembly in Accra has taken yet another bold step to flear properties sited on waterways.
Led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Sam Atukwei Quaye, the assembly will soon remove industrial properties at Muus in Ofankor in Accra to Kotoku near Nsawam.
Over 200 wood workers and mill operators there have covered a river passing through the area with sawdust and other waste materials thus blocking the free flow of water.
The workers claim they blocked the waterway to prevent the river from flooding its banks during rainfall.
Meanwhile during a tour of the site today, the Ga West MCE ordered the workers to vacate the area within a month to enable his outfit dredge the river.
Atukwei Quaye indicated that the assembly has made a land available at Kotoku to serve as a new site for the wood workers.
“There will be no more Muus within a month…we will demolish the place and dredge the river. This is to save lives and properties. When it rains not only does water enter peoples homes but also fecal matter.”
Mr. Quaye noted that his outfit has been in touch with the leadership of the workers saying they have welcomed the move.
In another development, the MCE has shut down a gas filling station in the area.
He explained that though the facility had been operating legally, it has now become a security threat because of the escalation of human settlements and shops there.
“The gas operator obtained a permit many years ago but we can’t allow him to continue to be there because circumstances have changed and if we don’t take care it’s going to create a problem.”
