The National Service Secretariat has deployed about 2,000 service personnel to serve under the Urban Sanitation Module.
Under this module the service personnel will collect data from households on sanitation practices and other vital information.
This data is to help government and its agencies, plan for the developmental needs of the country.
The programme is being undertaken with the support of the National Waste Bin Distribution Programme (NAWABIN).
[contextly_sidebar id=”xOoeOoUkRxJJZiBf25hRhi2n4JMwY1oe”]The objective is to help provide waste management companies with the necessary data they need to distribute bins to all households that are still without them.
It also seeks to help strengthen Local Government planning, through the mobilisation of data for efficient local development as well as the reduction of revenue leakages within the waste management sub-sector.
Speaking at this year’s launch of the Urban Sanitation Module, the Director of the National Service Scheme, Dr Michael Kpessa-Whyte indicated that besides providing IT solutions support to the key players, the personnel will also monitor waste management procedures as well as revenue collection.
“As an institution that essentially deploys young people coming out of our tertiary institutions, we thought that if the leaders of this country themselves are setting such wonderful examples, it is important that we take proactive steps to prevent the situation that sent them out from occurring,” he added
Some of the service persons who spoke to citifmonline.com expressed delight at the opportunity to serve the country via this module.
The module is a joint collaboration among the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), the National Waste Bin Distribution Programme (NaWaBin), Melchia Investments Ghana Limited (MIGL) and the National Service Scheme (NSS).
