The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) is advocating for a review of the district assembly election concept, to raise and sustain the interest of Ghanaians in polls at that level.
The call comes on the back of the low voter turn-out reported in the just-ended district level elections on Tuesday, September 1.
[contextly_sidebar id=”dt3cBl6P2TUu9qpCk7iWrgmr3vKASOFG”]Speaking on Eyewitness News, the National Coordinator of CODEO, Albert Arhin, argued that there is an urgent need to assess the current system to improve it.
“We have been having this election for a very long time and each and every time, the participation is not encouraging, then there are two things; either the dedication is not enough or people even do not understand what we mean by the district assembly concept,” he said.
“People do not understand the issues at stake, of the fact that there are people down there,” who are to see to the development of their various localities. So this may need us to take a critical look at it and then we look at the way forward,” Mr. Albert Arhin added.
Meanwhile CODEO has attributed the low voter turn out to the low publicity involving civil society groups as well as the postponement of the elections from March to September.
