President John Dramani Mahama has counseled the current crop of politicians, to emulate how past Ghanaian politicians conducted their business.
He said although those politicians had different political ideologies and orientations, they came together in times of socio-economic difficulties to face challenges.
“If we were to learn from the past politicians, I am sure we will have decent and dignified politics in this country, and away from insults and other abusive use of words,” President Mahama added.
The President made this call when Mr A.B. A Fuseini, Deputy Northern Regional Minister, led the family of the late Roland Issifu Alhassan, an astute diplomat and politician, to call on him at the Flagstaff House at Kanda.
The late R.I Alhassan, as he was affectionately called, died on April 14 at the 37 Military Hospital, and left behind a wife and six children.
Apart from his political career, Mr R.I Alhassan was also an Islamic Scholar, a Northern Education Elite, and Ghana’s Ambassador to Germany from 2001 to 2006.
President Mahama said he was one of the last people to die in the first generation of the Northern elites, and urged politicians, especially those from the northern sector of the country, to learn some of the good values the first generation left behind for Ghanaians.
The President, on behalf of the government and people of Ghana, expressed his condolence to the family, and gave the assurance that government would do everything possible to support them during the final funeral rites on Sunday, April 27.
Lieutenant-General Joshua Amidu, family head of the late diplomat, thanked President Mahama for his concern during the sickness of the late politician and diplomat.
