Some commercial drivers within the Ashaiman Municipality have embarked on a sit down strike to compel the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to revise a set of new directives.
The drivers are protesting what they say is an overwhelming increment in insurance fees.
[contextly_sidebar id=”b8DsX5olWrKEjDRn4WZTakNyHvql46ir”]Citi News’ Elvis Washington who was reporting from the Ashaiman station said : “…everything has changed again. Drivers have stopped working, they say they have started the strike. No commercial vehicle is working in Ashaiman.”
Speaking to Citi News, the Secretary of the Union, Samuel Amoah said; “it is good that we fight for our rights because if we sit down and they impose this thing on us, it will not help.”
Another driver, who is also a member of the union said: “Three hours down, everything has changed again. Drivers have stopped working. No commercial vehicle is working in Ashaiman.”
The Ghana Insurers Association on June 8th, 2015 announced it had reviewed the price for third party insurance tariffs.
Under the new policy, car owners can buy insurance on a short term basis at a cost of 1cedi 30 pesewas daily, monthly or annually.
The new development was the first time in five years premiums for motor insurance premium had been reviewed and increased.
