Some Muslim clerics in Tamale in the Northern Region are calling on government, security agencies and leaders in the Muslim communities to monitor the suspicious activities of the youth in their communities.

This call comes on the back of a confirmation by the National Security that two Ghanaian students have joined the terrorist group, ISIS.

[contextly_sidebar id=”2b3QSdnYaSzv7sSlGZsx3lozpmj1JXFR”]The National Security Co-ordinator, Mr Yaw Donkor,  confirmed that per the records of the National Security, Nazir Nortei Alema, a 25-year-old graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and another, whom he identified only as Rafiq, had joined  the group.

Security analysts say the government agencies trained to figure out the activities of extremist activities should be on the look out stop them.

Some Muslim clerics have also made similar calls on all Muslim families in Ghana to closely monitor their wards.

Speaking to Citi News, the Executive Director of Da-Awah Academy, Sheikh Abdul Karim Ibrahim Afa Zyei empasized the need for the media  to “know how to package the message regarding the terrorist group  so that it does not create fear and panic in the country.”

Meanwhile a group calling itself Tijjaniya Muslims of Ghana (TMG) has called all religious organisations and other stakeholders to join hands in fighting extreme groups and ideologies within the Ghanaian communities.

President of TMG, Sheikh Abdul Wadudu Haruna in a statement said the situation of extreme groups and ideologies should be a concern for all.

“We are calling on all stakeholders to join hands with the Tijjaniya Muslims of Ghana and the Islamic Peace and Security Council of Ghana in fighting extreme groups and ideologies within the Ghanaian communities, irrespective of religion and background,” he said.

“The Tijjaniya Muslims in Ghana, as a Sufi order, believes in moderation in Islam, freedom, advancement of universal human rights and practicing all religions sincerely for the sake of Allah alone,” he said.

He further commended the family of Nazir for their efforts to eliminate injustice and violent extremism in Ghana and the world at large.
