The Upper West Regional Minister, Ameen Sulemana has described threats by some residents of Hamile in the Upper West region to block the Hamile town road as needless.
According to the minister, the said major road that links Burkina Faso to Ghana has been awarded on contract and work will soon begin.
His comments follows demonstrations by residents on Tuesday after three articulator trucks broke down and blocked the road.
According to the residents, they can no longer allow access to the road that serves as a major route for travelers from Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger if authorities do not fix it.
However speaking to Citinews, Sulemana said “the road is on contract except that the contractors have been slow on the project. We are now going to send another contractor to work on it as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for the Lambusie Karni constituency in the Upper West region, Edward Dery has appealed to the residents to remain calm while the situation is being addressed.
Speaking to Citinews, Mr Dery said “yes this is an ECOWAS road and we cannot allow it to be closed. I am currently at site and we are working to maintain it for now while we wait for the contractors. In less than a week, we should be able to finish with the maintenance. I am appealing to residents to remain calm while we ensure that the right thing is done,” he assured.
