A Human Rights lawyer, Francis Sosu wants the Judicial Council to caution a Circuit Court judge who sentenced an alleged goat thief to parade the streets with the stolen goat.

Sosu said the judge erred in his sentencing, describing it as “reckless, lawless and completely unknown to our laws.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”zgrvS4spj0o7Dr25oadM5H6QAmoyLxXw”]The Akyem Swedru Circuit Court presided over by Emmanuel Brew, sentenced the goat thief to parade the town with the stolen goat around his neck, with an inscription saying “I’m a goat thief.”

The judge’s “non-custodial” sentencing has received varying opinions from the public.

Speaking to Citi News, lawyer Sosu said the judge went beyond his constitutionally mandated jurisdiction and violated the suspect’s human rights.

He was strongly convinced the judge needed to be cautioned “because if we do not do that, we will be encouraging judges to act in excess of the powers that have been conferred on them by law.”

“The constitution, article 15 clearly states that the rights of a person shall be inviolable. That includes that right of a convicted person. What he (judge) did was a dehumanizing treatment and it was unlawful and I think the judge must be brought to book,” he said.
