The Ministry of Health has revealed that postings for psychiatric nurses who completed their education two years ago will be ready by the end of August this year.

This follows a meeting with the Mental Health Authority and the Chief Psychiatrist, Dr. Akwasi Osei after some of the affected nurses picketed at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital last Monday.

The nurses demanded among other things, that the Health Ministry expedites action to facilitate their clearance from the Finance Ministry to allow them to be posted.

“The Mental Health Authority (MHA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health has agreed to give us a maximum of two weeks for them to get our clearance for us and also have us posted. The MHA also told us if we do not get the response by the end of the two weeks, we should hold them responsible,”

“Honestly we didn’t want to listen to anybody but because it involved the MHA in this commitment, that is what stimulated us to at least give them the benefit of the doubt till the end of the month… We hope that by the end of the month something good will come out and that our clearance will be ready and our postings would be effected,” he added.

On whether or not the affected nurses are satisfied with the two week assurance by the ministry, Emmanuel Geyevo stated that the group is yet to decide on the necessary action to take if they fail.

Meanwhile the president has assured psychiatric nurses who are yet to receive their pins as a result of delays by the Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC) efforts are being made to address them.

“We’ve reported this to the council and they said they are working on them… some have received and some are yet to receive, so we are working on them,

“For when they will receive it, I can’t tell, it’s the NMC which has to answer,” he explained.
