Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he does not need to strengthen his forward line after his side’s goalless draw with Newcastle.

United have managed just two goals in their opening three Premier League games and striker Wayne Rooney has not scored for the club since 4 April.

They were linked with Pedro before the striker left Barcelona for Chelsea.

Asked whether he needed to sign more forwards, Van Gaal said: “No, because we were three times the best team.”

The hosts missed multiple chances to score against Newcastle, while Rooney had a goal ruled out for offside and Chris Smalling headed against a post.

“Wayne scored. Only it was not allowed,” added Van Gaal, after the end of his side’s 100% winning start to the season.
“It is doubtful and the rules are that when it is doubtful, then do not flag.
“But it is also football and I have said already many times you need more equipment to help the referees and linesmen because it is not easy.”

Speaking about his side’s lack of goals, Van Gaal said: “My worry is that we have to dominate the opponent and we did it today, we did it against Aston Villa, Tottenham and Club Brugge.

“I am satisfied with the performance and not with the result.
“We were unlucky with rewarding ourselves because we have created a lot of chances.”

United have been linked with Barcelona forward Neymar.
“I don’t enter in this discussion,” Van Gaal added when asked about the report.

“You can ask about all the players in the world and you are doing that with every press conference and I always say the same thing.
“I have to protect the interests of Manchester United, the players in my selection and the people in my organisation.”
