The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has backed calls by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for a new voters register.
[contextly_sidebar id=”jp5MsxedVXzCho0FZhzBV9tmrvCRE4wJ”]The party says the 2016 election will be accepted by all if a new credible register is compiled by the Electoral Commission.
Speaking to Citi News, the party’s National Secretary, Kofi Asamoah Siaw said the new register is important for the country’s democracy.
“It doesn’t lie in the mouth of the Asiedu Nketia to say that everything is okay. We know how they behave when they are in opposition, but when they are in power, everything is okay,” he reacted to NDC General Secretary’s comment to rubbish the call for the new register.
The PPP maintains that the existing voters’ register is flawed and the issues raised must be addressed to ensure a free and fair election.
“Everything cannot be okay with the electoral system. All we need to do is to stop, look and listen and find a permanent solution to this perennial problem,” Mr Siaw concluded.
The Flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akuffo Addo and his running mate, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia at a press conference on Tuesday called for the revision of the national register saying it is bloated hence lacks credibility.
Dr. Bawumia revealed that about 76,286 Togolese nationals have their names registered in Ghana’s voters’ register. This has received support from some groups and activists including a civil society group, Let My Vote Count, (LMVC) who described the call for a revision of the country’s voters’ register as timely.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia on Wednesday, dismissed the evidence raised by the NPP.
He has challenged the NPP to go to court over the concerns. He said many of the purported evidences provided by the NPP are totally false.
The Electoral Commission is set to convene an Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting on Friday to consider the proposals presented to it by the New Patriotic Party.
