Pupils of the Tupaa Basic School have over the past two decades, received their education under sheds made from palm branches.

The school which has a population of 160 pupils and 9 professional teachers is the only educational facility for the 10 farming communities in the Ga South Municipality in the Greater Accra region.

Tigo Ghana’s high priority on education is backed by the belief that it is the key to unlocking the chains of poverty. In light of this, the telecoms company constructed a new six-unit classroom block for the community, complete with a headmaster’s office, staff common room and public place of convenience. This project is expected to cause enrolment in the next academic term to soar.

In her remarks during a brief ceremony to officially hand over the school complex to the chief and people of the village Kore, the Municipal Education Director for Ga South Municipal Assembly, Mrs. Margaret Frempong acknowledged the deplorable condition of Tupaa Basic School and described it as the sub-standard environment for school going children. “During my tour of the assembly as the new Director of Education, I was very surprised to find the school in such awful condition. It’s a real pity schools of such deplorable states exist within the Greater Accra region, home of the capital city of Ghana. I was moved to tears to see these pupils defy all odds to study under such conditions”.

“The new school building will motivate parents to educate their wards. Initially, they felt no need to let their wards attend school because there were no proper educational structures in place. I am so happy about what Tigo Shelter4Education has done for us,” said the headmaster, Mr. Osman Kweku Eshun.

Similarly the Municipal Education Director expressed her profound gratitude to the Tigo Ghana Shelter 4Education Programme and pleaded for additional assistance to improve the quality of education in the area.

Head of Corporate Communications and CSR of Tigo Ghana, Gifty Bingley in her speech stated, “We believe that the future belong to these beautiful children. That is why we are creating a conducive environment for them. We remain committed to empowering communities by promoting educational opportunities that make a positive difference.
