Construction of the Yendi-Bimbila stretch of the Eastern Corridor road project has halted as a result of thievery by some local artisans.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ArRqlnxDTbThPUbsHfvPhJiOcnlPMAzx”]According to the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, 106 of the workers have been laid off.

He said the contractors engaged the services of 1,800 unemployed youth in the region.

“They gave us the opportunity to bring them 1, 800 local content: as we speak now 106 have been laid off because they have stolen to the extent that the project cannot continue.”

Alhaji Limuna revealed this on the occasion of the 2015 International Youth Day celebration held in Tamale under the auspices of the National Youth Authority.

“Those of you travelling on the Bimbila road if you challenge me go and see they have demobilized from the Bimbila side because of these problems: you meet the contractors and you cannot raise your head because you force them to take the boys and they are misbehaving.”

He lamented, “That is the type of youth we have so please also go and re-examine your life and see whether this is what you want us to promote.”

Alhaji Limuna described the situation as a major setback to the region’s transformational agenda.

He advised the youth to say no to sealing and aspire to be responsible citizens.

Dismissal of the 106 local artisans working on the Eastern Corridor Road followed the imprisonment of eight local artisans caught siphoning fuel and stealing materials meant for the Tamale Airport upgrading and expansion project.
