Pedestrians who usually cross the road at Tetteh Quarshie interchange close to the Accra mall in fear, can heave a sigh of relief.
The Director of Departments for Urban Roads, Alhaji Abass Aworlu has revealed that work is almost complete on the foot bridges on both the Tetteh Quarshie interchange and George Walker Bush Highway.
According to him, the foot bridge at Tetteh Quarshie will be opened to pedestrians by the end of August.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Aworlu whose outfit failed to meet the March 2015 deadline was optimistic that the Tetteh Quarshie footbridge will be opened to the public as promised.
“We have to do some walkways and some paving works and if you go there now that is what is being done otherwise it creates its own challenges but we expect that by the grace of God we should be able to open the footbridge by the end of the month,” he said.
Several people who attempting to cross the roads have been knocked down and killed by vehicles while others have sustained serious injuries in similar accidents.
Mr Aworlu further stated that the Department together with the Ghana Highway Authority will complete work on the George Walker Bush Highway soon.
“In the interim we had actually put in some measures to improve the lighting along the road. By this, we are putting up solar systems to support the traffic lights so that when we have challenges with the national grid, these solar systems work,” he said.
He added that “We did one at Fiesta Royal and in the process of completing another at Abeka, one has been installed at Awoshie junction and once we are done, hopefully we should be able to have an uninterrupted supply of power to the traffic lights and that will aid pedestrians who are crossing the road,” he explained.
