The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has added its voice to calls on government not to sign the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the European Union (EU).
Several Civil Society Organizations including the Christian Council and the Trades Union Congress have all disapproved of government’s attempt to sign the Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union.
Government at a recent stakeholder consultative forum in Accra addressed by the Ministers for Trade and Foreign Affairs, Harunah Iddrisu and Hannah Tetteh attempted to justify the importance of signing the EPA with the EU.
Both of them implied that Ghana stood the chance of gaining more from its migration onto the European market.
However, Chairperson of the CPP, Samia Yaaba Nkrumah told Citi News signing the EPA with the EU was dangerous to Ghana’s economic independence.
“The EPA will deprive us from our independent national development agenda to produce more locally; signing the agreement will make it difficult for locally produced goods to compete with products in international markets.”
“The position of the CPP is that we are against the signing of the EPA; we agree with the Civil Society Organizations and all the groups that are against the signing of the EPA,” she lamented.
Samia Nkrumah advised government to reconsider its stance and ignore the deal.
