A labour analyst, Austin Gamey has backed government’s plans to withhold the salaries of striking public workers.
[contextly_sidebar id=”oZ7aVyT1rinNHcZouOKQhjcD6UJOpZam”]In an interview with Citi News, the former minister insisted that if the government is able to carry-out the threat, it will send the strongest signal to the workers that the nation will no longer entertain their disregard for due process and rule of law.
“I am not too sure whether the boldness of the minister for and on behalf of government can be brought to reality, but I think it is long overdue. Even most private companies in the country are unable to do it so it will be highly commendable should government implement it. Individuals that may be willing to work for the people of Ghana, kudos to them, but the rest of them who are unwilling to work for Ghana, they have the decision to make for themselves,” he added.
Government on Tuesday announced that it would be compelled to freeze salaries of striking doctors should they continue with their “illegal” strike.
A statement signed by the Minister of Employment, Haruna Iddrisu directed “all heads of government establishments where workers have embarked on illegal (partial or full) strike actions to compile and submit to their respective Ministers of State the list of workers who have been absenting themselves from work as a result of a strike or protest.”
Doctors in the public sector about two weeks ago laid down their tools to demand conditions of service.
They have refused to return to work until their grievances are addressed.
