Negotiations between government and striking doctors over their conditions of service have broken down, leaving the doctors with very little option but to carry out their mass resignation threats.
The two parties met today [Sunday] in an attempt to agree on the conditions of service proposals presented by the doctors.
According to sources within the meeting, government did not agree on the proposals the doctors presented while the doctors also rejected what government presented.
The General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association Dr Justice Yankson told citifmonline.com, “Negotiations have broken down,” without further details.
A leaked document outlining the official demands of members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) shows that the Association wants among other things clothing and fuel allowances and on-call duty allowance.
Implications
The doctors have already withdrawn emergency services and services to out-patient departments across all public hospitals in the country.
With the latest development, they are expected to regroup and decide on whether they will indeed resign en bloc from the public sector or back down on their threats.
