President John Mahama has revealed that the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) will start at the end of the year.
[contextly_sidebar id=”N1L1VDuRCOxAq82tGFq0IXGZMrkeFlKM”]According to the president, the first buses for the program are already in the country while other bus infrastructure including terminals have almost been completed.
The president gave this assurance when he performed ceremonies to open to traffic, two flyovers of the Kwame Nkrumah interchange which have been completed.
“The Bus Rapid Transit system between Amasaman and Accra is almost completed. These two critical flyovers which have been completed are going to be carried by the BRT. Bus infra facilities including new terminals at Ofankor and Amasaman, a remodeling of sections of the Achimota terminal and bus shelters are being provided,” he said.
“There will be an exclusive lane from Farisco to Tudu as well as an upgrade of the traffic lights along the corridor using LED and solar standalone systems as the main source of power. The first buses to use the corridor have arrived and are undergoing test runs on the corridors and we expect that the system will be operational by the end of 2015,” the president added.
The Bus Rapid Transit system aims at providing the Ghanaian public with greater options and flexibility in road transport with an improvement in public transportation.
The first batch of 116 buses for the BRT arrived in the country earlier in the year.
Some of these buses have also been designed to allow for easy access by persons with disability.
