Barely 24 hours after the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) declared a strike over book and research allowances, has Citi News sighted a letter from the Education Ministry showing that the ministry had already initiated moves to address their grievances.
The letter dated 13th July, 2015 among other things, requested the Auditor General to audit the claims of institutions within the tertiary sector for the payment of allowances.
[contextly_sidebar id=”CGmpgUzZqehIyugu1L1fCmBVTNkuGktP”]“The Executive Secretary of the National Council for tertiary education is seeking confirmation for the rates to be used for the payment of Book and research allowances to senior members of public tertiary institutions for the 2015 financial year,” the letter signed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang stated.
“You are kindly requested to among other things: Confirm the rates for implementation in 2015, indicate the cedi to dollar exchange rate, request the auditor general to audit the claims of the institutions within the tertiary sector for the payment of the allowances.”
The letter further asked the Ministry of Finance to expedite action on the letter to “enable public tertiary institutions initiate the application process for the payment of book and research allowances on time.”
UTAG declared an indefinite strike on Wednesday claiming that efforts to have their book and research allowances paid them have proved futile.
