The Vice President, Mr K. B. Amissah-Arthur, on Tuesday laid the foundation stone at Buranamua, near Anomabo in the Central Region, for Ghana’s first fisheries college.

Known as John Evans Atta Mills College of Fisheries, it is a tribute to the late President for his commitment to its establishment as well as his vision to accelerate the transformation of the fisheries sub-sector.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Amissah-Arthur observed that the fisheries college, which is in fulfillment of one of the government’s major campaign promises to the players in the fishing industry, will lead to a new era of sustainable marine resources management and aquaculture development in Ghana.

He said “it is a timely intervention, especially as it will provide facilities for the training of the middle level and professional class personnel who will drive the transformation agenda for the modernisation of the fisheries sub-sector.”

Mr Amissah-Arthur also noted that the College will provide opportunities for training practising fishermen, fishmongers and fish farmers in the application of science and technology in their fields of endeavour.
