President John Dramani Mahama has charged framers of the nation’s development plan to help devise strategies that will help boost Ghana’s economy.

President Mahama said this at a program to launch the preparation of a long-term National Development Plan for the country today.

[contextly_sidebar id=”stRqP6YagyLvEQ6yDXgNCzraq7W6zOcs”]The plan is the first ever long-term development plan spanning a period of 40 years.

President Mahama said “I’m convinced that all those who will in the next year or so make their voices heard in these consultations can make this a truly national exercise.”

President Mahama further urged them to among other things capture development plans to help strengthens institutions in the country.

“Another lesson we can draw from my experience is to be concise on what we develop. I’m sure we can agree that all the things we want can be translated as follows in the following four bullets:

  1. The economy: To make the economy transformative, inclusive and resilient.
  2. Society: To make the society equitable and tolerant.
  3. Our communities: To make our communities safe and sustainable.
  4. Our institutions: To make them strong, effective and efficient.”

He added that in this era of globalization, “we also have the responsibility to play our role to secure a world of peace and justice.”

“Ghana as a responsible member of the global community is signatory to many global continental and regional conventions and has sought to include these documents and principles in our national plans. In this way the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) inform some of the goals of the Ghana Shared Growth and Development Agenda.”

Ghana is currently undergoing a three-year programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) aimed at healing the nation’s ailing economy.
