The Health Ministry has instructed all heads of public health facilities to be at post to work with non-striking staff available during the period of the strike by the Ghana Medical Association.

This was contained in a strategy statement aimed at reducing the impact of the doctors strike.

The Ministry has also directed all ambulance services to remain on standby for emergency services.

Visit private hospitals – NHIA tells clients

In a related development, the National Health insurance authority (NHIA) is urging all NHIS subscribers to visit the  over 1,000 accredited private and faith based hospitals across the county instead of public health facilities, following the doctor’s strike.

“NHIS cards are not only eligible in government establishments but can be used in the over 1,000 NHIS-credentialed private and faith-based healthcare facilities,” a statement signed by the Communications Manager of the NHIS, Selorm Adonoo stated.

The statement further noted that cardholders can access healthcare “at the 37 Military and Police Hospitals in Accra and the many Health Centres and Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds across the country.”

“This arrangement is to ensure that subscribers of the NHIS continue to access healthcare services while the Ghana Medical Association (GMA)’s negotiations with government and strike persist,” the stated added.

Doctors in the country on July 30,2015 laid down their tools to protest the absence of conditions of service document for them.

They have vowed to further resign from the public service if government fails to meet their demand.
