The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) is asking the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GIDCo) to as a matter of urgency come out with a load-shedding timetable for the impending maintenance works it intends carrying out.

[contextly_sidebar id=”cm3bIN9MpfEqPN9haKmj6Kd40kN9QVLN”]GRIDCo on Tuesday announced that it intends replacing all old machines across the country as a means to improve efficiency.

The maintenance works according to GRIDCo is expected to worsen the power situation.

The Director of External Relations at PURC, Nana Yaw Jantuah spoke to Citi News.

“Anytime they do maintenance, there is some form of interruption. If you have a maintenance that is lapsing going into 2016, you could do it bit by bit that will not affect me. You don’t have to create panic in my mind. The law says that they should bring out a schedule. The statement is even faulty, it is vague, the commission is looking at the schedule critically, and at the appropriate time, they will let the public know their response,” she stated.

‘Dumsor’

The power crisis has worsened over the past few weeks. and is now popularly known as “Dumsor.”

Consequently, the initial load-shedding timetable designed to shed between 300 MW and 400MW of power and allowed consumers to enjoy 24 hours of power after 12 hours off is no longer being followed.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has said it is currently not following any timetable because the quantum of power it receives from source is not consistent.

The Head of Corporate Communications at Volta River Authority, Mr. Sam Fletcher has said he is unable to explain why the ECG cannot give Ghanaians a schedule.

“Unfortunately I don’t. We understand that we all have our remit when it comes to discussing matters. I can only discuss matters in relation to generation and possibly gas supply but definitely not generation,” he added.
