The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has rejected claims that the impounded motorbikes will end up back of the streets of Accra.
Police Commander DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno was responding to allegations that the owners of the bikes will be let off the hook after paying some amount of money.
This follows a Police special operation on Tuesday in which over 1,000 motorbikes were impounded.
The affected motorbikes included ‘Okada’ riders and motorbikes of courier companies.
All motorbikes, together with those that have valid documentation from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), were also impounded.
Owners of the bikes are currently undergoing screening at various divisional commands across the Metropolis.
DCOP Yohuno however told Citi News in an interview that after screening, only those innocent of any illegality will be released
“Those who are genuine will come back but those that we know have criminal intentions, we will disable them [motorbikes] so that we don’t have them on the streets because if you are not there, you cannot be able to walk effectively.”
He noted that the motorbikes “are the legs that they sue to run very fast. Now, we will all walk and when they commit the offense, we will chase them by foot, if it by vehicle, we will chase them by vehicle so we will sustain it.”
