A heavy rainstorm has displaced about 180 people in four communities in the Afigya-Kwabre district in the Ashanti region.
A number of buildings, including a chief’s palace and a cocoa shed, had either their roofing ripped off, or walls collapsed, under the impact of the storm.
In all, eight people were hurt by flying debris, and had to receive treatment at the Boamang Hospital
Mr Kwaku Kaakyire Oppong-Kyekyeku, District Chief Executive (DCE), and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Afigya-Kwabre North, Nana Marfo Amaniampong, on Tuesday, jointly visited the affected communities to assess the extent of damage.
They were accompanied by officials at the district office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).
A 40-year-old victim, Madam Theresa Anokye, said it was just through miracle that she survived with her five children at her kitchen where they had ran to, to take shelter.
Another victim, Madam Yaa Dede, said she sustained a deep cut in the left arm by a flying roofing sheet, when she attempted to escape from her collapsed house.
Many of the affected residents are now living with relatives, while some have taken temporary accommodation in a mosque.
The DCE conveyed his sympathy to the victims, and assured them that everything possible would be done to assist them.
He urged the people to engage qualified artisans, and ensure the use of quality materials and in their right quantities, for the construction of their houses.
Nana Amaniampong pledged to collaborate with the district assembly and NADMO, to supply the affected people with relief items.
