The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection today begun the distribution of emergency LEAP funds to victims of the June 3 flood in the five affected regions.
The regions are Greater Accra, Western, Ashanti, Volta and Central Regions. The budgeted amount to be paid is 3.9 million Cedis to 13000 households.
According to the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection Nana Oye Lithur, each affected household will be paid 100 Ghana Cedis for the next three months.
She explained that categories of beneficiaries include “households which lost a bread winner in the flood and fire disaster, as well as those who lost their businesses and other belongings”.
The Acting Director of social protection Mr. Richard Adjetey said to select beneficiaries of this intervention, “the LEAP Management Unit of the Department of Social Development did a mapping of the affected communities and administered questionnaires to affected persons. A ranking was done and the beneficiaries were selected”.
Odorna recorded the highest number of victims. 1277 victims have been recorded in the area alone.
Other communities in Greater Accra where beneficiaries have been identified are Gbegbeese, Glefe, Osu, Ashiaman and Teshie.
The rest are Tema, Nungua, Kaneshie, Ada and Adenta. In the Volta Region, payment to affected persons will be done in Keta and Ketu South. Those in the Ashanti, Western and Central Regions will also be paid.
Payment will be done electronically by the Ghana Interbank Payment Settlement System (GhIPSS).
