Government has been advised to consider naming some public universities after some past Presidents of Ghana.

This, according to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South and Employment and Labour Relations Minister Haruna Iddrisu, is a better honour than only eulogizing them when they die.

“Many of the public universities should be named after some of our former leaders… and I think that we should begin to honour them while they live instead of just eulogizing them when they are dead,” he said.

In his address to the House, the Tamale South MP listed a number of public universities for consideration.

He stated that the university in the Brong Ahafo Region and Volta Region could be named after the late Professor Mills while the University of Development Studies (UDS) be named after ex-President Jerry Rawlings.

The University in Tarkwa, he said could be named after ex-President John Kufuor.

Citing the Unite States of America to buttress his point, Mr. Iddrisu said the country has a Presidential Memorial Library but since there aren’t many functioning libraries in Ghana, naming them after public universities will be more befitting.

“Fortunately for President Mills, he initiated one at UCC [University of Cape Coast] but I think that for many, we will appreciate what they did for this country if those libraries were functioning,” he remarked.

“I strongly suggest that our public universities be named after persons who have served this Republic in different capacities particularly, in the position of the first man in the Republic,” The Employment and Labour Minister added.
