Ghanaian player Michael Essien is set to undergo surgery in Munich after the 32-year-old suffered a groin injury.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan player sustained the injury during a training session with Panathinaikos, a club where he transferred to in the current transfer window as a free agent.

The player has flown to Germany where he will be going under the knife in a bid to recover soon.

Michael Essien who was expected to make a debut in Panathinaikos’ UEFA Champions League game against Club Brugge has now been left out of the squad as he battles with his injury.

The player will be out for some weeks after the surgery in Germany.

The Black Star had limited playing chances at his last club AC Milan and hoped for more games with Greek side Panathinaikos. An injury is a big blow to the dream and would hope to get back to playing action quickly.
