A court order for a recount of votes in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sunyani East constituency primaries has re-affirmed the legitimacy of the incumbent Member of Parliament, Kwesi Ameyaw-Kyeremeh.

The losing candidate in the June 13 primaries, George Kumi who is also Ghana’s former Ambassador to Libya and High Commissioner to Nigeria in the erstwhile Kufuor administration petitioned the Sunyani High Court for a recount of the votes.

He had obtained a total of 387 votes, losing to the incumbent, Kwesi Ameyaw-Kyeremeh, who had 388 votes in the keenly contested election.

The court subsequently ordered a recount of the votes on Friday and after two hours of counting, Kwesi Ameyaw-Kyeremeh even had one more vote in addition to his original number of votes, while the aggrieved candidate lost one more.

Speaking to Citi News, the Sunyani East Constituency Secretary, Ankomah Boamah Samuel said the new figures indicate that Kwesi Ameyaw-Kyeremeh was legitimately elected.

Mr. Ankomah Samuel said party members “will return to the court for the final endorsement.”
