The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is finalizing a Child Justice Policy to help promote the rights of children in the country.
This was revealed by the Minister Nana Oye Lithur at the launch of the child and family welfare policy in Accra.
[contextly_sidebar id=”pFyigmymXtdKnELJueFPhIMShtmELQ1h”]She indicated that “the policy will principally cater for children who are in conflict with the law and also cater for children who are not being looked after by their parents”
This policy is expected to address issues on children who have commited offences, child victims, child witnesses and children who come into contact with the law in civil matters.
Nana Oye Lithur explained the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) last year had over six thousand cases of children who were not looked after by their parents. But the ministry does not have enough power to deal with such issues.
The formulation and implementation of the Child Justice Policy will give the ministry the power to go after parents who neglect their duties to their children.
Nana Oye said “the Justice for Children policy is going to set up a child support unit that now has the legal power to go after parents who are not looking after their children”.
The minister explained that the policy will be finalized by the third quarter after which it will be submitted to cabinet for its approval.
