The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) in collaboration with Roche Ghana Limited have organised a workshop in Accra to train health practitioners on cancer management.
The workshop held under the theme “Oncology for non-oncology” attracted a wide range of health practitioners which included medical doctors and nurses.
Speaking to Citi News at the workshop, the Deputy General Secretary of the GMA, Dr. Justice Yankson said the workshop will enhance the knowledge of medical practitioners on cancer management.
He bemoaned the growing recorded cases of cancer in the country and was confident that the workshop will enable medical practitioners detect cases of cancer at the early stage.
“In Ghana a lot of cancer patients report late to the hospital and cancer at the advanced level becomes difficult to treat. It is much easier to treat when detected earlier”, he said.
Dr. Yankson opined that the workshop was crucial to reduce the number of advanced cases in Ghana and as well create the necessary awareness.
For her part, the Medical Manager for ROCHE Ghana Limited DR. Odette Kwarteng said the company was committed to providing the necessary support to facilitate cancer management in Ghana.
“Globally the company has been in existence for 119 years. Over the past 50 years we have seriously invested in Ghana research”, she said.
She stated that the company will continue to provide diagnostic support and funding to ensure the efficient management of cancer in Ghana.
“The number of reported cancer cases keeps increasing in Ghana and we are committed to reducing the numbers through education”, she said.
