Inflation for the month of June 2015 increased to 17.1% from the 16.9% recorded in May 2015.

The food inflation rose to 7.4% compared with the 7.3% recorded for May 2015.
Non food inflation recorded 23.6% moving up 0.2% from that of May 2015 which was 23.4%.
The main price drivers for non food inflation rate were housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels with transport recording inflation rate of 25.5% and clothing and foot wear at 24.3%.
Communication recorded the lowest rate of 12.0% in the non-food group.
The consumer price index measures the change over time in the general price levels of goods and service.
Speaking to Citi Business News Government Statistician at Ghana Statistical Service Dr. Philomena Nyarko attributed the increase in inflation to the high rent under housing in the non food inflation which recorded a rate of 66.6% in June.
“We are talking about increases in the inflation rate of transport, housing water electricity and gas with other fuels we are talking about education, clothing and foot wear, recreation and water among others which are the main drivers for the increase in the inflation for the month of June 2015.
So under housing we saw rent go so high that is it increased by some 66.6%, we therefore wish if the rent control can step in and see what can be done to normalized the situation soon.”
Four regions Central, Ashanti, Volta and Upper East recorded inflation rates above the national average of 17.1%.
