How to survive anything from heart attacks to plane crashes and zombie attacks

We ALL know what to do if we’re attacked by a rampaging bear – you play dead to distract it.

It’s something like that, anyway.

But what about more everyday dangers – from a twinge in your chest, to choking on a Monster Munch?

We’ve picked out the best tips to help you live through ANYTHING (including a couple of, er, slightly less everyday dangers, such as a zombie apocalypse).

Choking on something

You can actually perform a sort-of Heimlich manoeuvre on yourself if you really CAN’T cough something up.

Make a fist, place it just above your belly button, and bash it in really hard about five times.

Plane crash

Fly economy. An experiment by TV production company Dragonfly found that the more expensive seats at the front of a plane – where First Class usually is – are often torn out in crashes.

Avalanche

Jump up the slope – and start swimming.

Most avalanche victims trigger an avalanche themselves –  a quick jump upwards can sometimes take people above the fracture line and to safety.

If that doesn’t work, swim upwards – the human body is denser than snow, so you’ll tend to sink. Thrash your arms and legs so you don’t.

Heart pains

Call an ambulance – then chew an aspirin. This stops blood clots forming, which can reduce the chance of a heart attack occurring.

Severe bleeding

Don’t bother with a tourniquet – they can do more harm than good. Apply pressure to the wound, and raise it to the level of the heart to reduce blood flow.

Zombie apocalypse

Zombie Army Trilogy – will zombies guarantee another hit?

Run for the hills. Simply hiding inside buildings – or God forbid, running around smashing in zombie skulls with a baseball bat – is a terrible idea, Cornell University researchers revealed after running the first ‘complete’ mathematical simulation.

The best way to survive is actually to run for country areas – in particular sparsely populated mountains (the researchers give the example of the Rockies, but the Cairngorms ought to do it).
