Contrary to the perception that his hit song Tonga has risque lyrics, Hiplife artiste, Joey B says the song is clean and decent.
According to Joey B, in an interview with Showbiz last Sunday, if Tonga were profane, it would not have made the nominations list of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards(VGMA).
“In fact, I was not surprised at all that Tonga had six nominations in this year’s VGMA. It made the list because the lyrics are clean.
“Tonga couldn’t have been rejected by the VGMA Board because the lyrics are clean. Every single line in the song stands for something. I wrote the song and I know what I wanted to achieve and I am glad the song has made that impact” said Joey B.
The artiste, also known for other songs such as Strawberry and Cigarette pointed out that, he is a good Christian who believes in the Bible so, it was not surprising that with prayers, the song became an instant hit.
Joey B real name Darryl Bannerman- Martin goes on to explain that Tonga simply stands for a woman. “I wanted a catchy word for a female and I thought Tonga could do the trick and it did catch the attention of Ghanaians. Tonga is not what some people think it is. I can explain the lyrics of my song better to anyone who wants me to do that.”
The artiste who is eyeing not less than three VGMA gongs this year said he is currently in the studio putting finishing touches to his album which will feature some of the best rappers and singers in Ghana.
