The Ashanti Regional Prisons Service says it is investigating circumstances that led to the escape of two of its prisoners from the Amanfrom Camp prisons near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The two prisoners who were serving various sentences at the prison were said to have escaped last Friday when prisoners who had been granted amnesty were being released.

President John Dramani Mahama on July 1, granted amnesty to 900 prisoners nationwide.
In the Ashanti Region, 218 prisoners were released.
The PRO, George Owusu in an interview with Citi News said “at the Kumasi Central prison, 37 inmates were released, at our female prison we released 3. When you go to Amanfrom camp prison they released 47, at Ahinsan in the Adansi North District, they released 26, Manhyia, 55 and Obuasi 20.”
He explained that “as i’m talking to you, they are all in their homes. They are all first offenders and they might have served half of their sentences. They might also have comported themselves in a manner that we think they have reformed, so that’s why they were released.”
George Owusu urged the society to accept them saying “when they come and you don’t accept them, they will go and commit another crime and then be brought back to prison. But when the society and families accept them, they will not go to the streets to commit any crime.”
Meanwhile, in the Brong Ahafo Region, 125 prisoners were released.
