Four people are reported dead and several others injured after renewed gun battles in Bimbilla in the Northern Region.
The incident according to reports followed disagreements between some butchers which led to several homes being torched in the attacks.
[contextly_sidebar id=”IDnrIJNiFVrQKcPO8YrcnO1NOVzPqrc6″]The Public Relations officer of the Ghana Police in the Northern Region, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh said security has been beefed up in the area to prevent further attacks.
“The number of persons who have been killed are four, their bodies have been retrieved at the place and those who have sustained injuries are 9 and are receiving treatment at the Bimbilla government hospital. Some houses have also been burnt.”
Bimbilla has been under curfew for some time now following sporadic shooting incidents that occur in the area.
According to ASP Tetteh, “as at the time the incident was happening, Bimbilla was not under curfew. The curfew has been reviewed from 9pm to 5am.”
He however noted that there is calm in the area adding that “we have covered every place in the Bimbilla Township and we have also as a local measure, restricted the movement of persons in and around the area in order to prevent an escalation of the violence.”
“The military and Police are on the ground, formed Police unit have also arrived in the town and they are beefing up the numbers that are already on the ground.”
Meanwhile a local journalist in Bimbilla Mohammed Ameenu Alabira told Citi News that for fear of being caught up in any reprisal attacks, some residents have started evacuating the town.
He explained that the residents “are saying the place is not secured and that they do not understand why these pockets of violence continue to happen in Bimbilla.’
