The Minority Spokesperson on Defence, William Ofori Boafo has said the Interior Minister, Mark Woyongo’s comments on acts of violence in the recent Talensi by-election exposed his lack of confidence in the Police Service.
The Interior Minister on Wednesday, defended the decision by vigilante groups, Azorka boys and Bolga Bulldogs to stage attacks during the polls, describing their actions as a pure case of “violence begets violence”.
[contextly_sidebar id=”MQtG0Zv1RtKkDSJIifR9IoqgmrljAfwl”]Speaking in an interview with Eyewitness News host, Richard Dela Sky, Mr. Boafo explained that the Minister’s comments gave a clear indication that “he doubts the competence of the Police in handling violent cases”.
“It was an unfortunate casual remarks by the Minister because I least expected him, having being a Minister of Defence, a Minister of one of the regions and now a Minister of Interior I least expected such remarks from him.”
He further expressed fears that the Minister’s comments might trigger “disaffection in the Police Service.”
Investigate Woyongo
The Minister has come under intense criticism, while others have also called for his removal since he made those comments.
Speaking on the development, Mr. Boafo however downplayed calls for his dismissal and rather suggested that he should be investigated.
“I will prefer that we investigate the post relationship between him and the security agencies. Mark Woyongo should not be dismissed. He is a good minister but maybe not for his current position.”
I’ll remain in office
In a related development, Mr. Woyongo, has condemned calls for his resignation, vowing to remain in office.
“Resign for what? When people said ‘all die be die’ – ‘we have Atiwa’ and all sorts of nasty incidents in the past … how many people resigned, “ the Minister queried.
