A blood donation exercise has been organised by the Metropolitan Group of Companies in Ghana as part of their Corporate Social Investments, together with other companies within the vicinity of their offices to help supply the national blood bank after the fire and flood disaster of June 3, 2015.

According to a press statement by the Metropolitan Group, AJ Kruger, CEO of Metropolitan Life and Executive Director of Metropolitan Pensions Trust and Metropolitan Health Insurance noted that this was part of the companies’ response to the double disasters.

“We have monitored various media reports and we know the strain on your facility following the disaster and have made the decision to support this Hospital and Ghanaians as a whole in these difficult periods, hence the presentation this afternoon,” Kruger stated.

The Metropolitan Group also donated medical supplies worth several thousands of Ghana Cedis to the 37 Military Hospital, to support those injured and sick from the disaster.

The items donated to the hospital include supplies for burns treatment, Cholera infusions and others.

On June 3, 2015, over one hundred people died in an explosion at a GOIL fuel station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra on June 3, 2015.

After the disaster, the Minister of Health, Alex Segbefia had appealed to Ghanaians to volunteer and donate blood to help save lives, especially during the emergency situation after managers of Ghana’s blood bank complained of a shortage of blood in stock.

“Can I make an appeal to the whole country, not just Accra, that the time has come that we should begin to look for those who have the ability to donate blood. One of the things you need with burns is plasma and therefore anyone, who can donate blood should go and do so, so that those who are living with us, will have a good chance of staying with us,” he had said.
