Pressure group, Movement for Change is asking President John Mahama to sack the Minister of Interior over comments he made which seem to have justified the violent clashes during the Talensi by-election in Talensi.
Violent clashes left several political figures injured while properties were also destroyed after some members of the two main political parties NDC and NPP attacked each other.
[contextly_sidebar id=”5IdI3tvEmfZq8qKoouMFt37WcX8HUauz”]The Interior Minister Mark Woyongo in a radio interview the vigilante groups, Azorka boys and Bolga Bulldogs who allegedly perpetrated the violence only acted to defend themselves, and that it was a pure case of “violence begets violence.”
“Violence begets violence. Azoka boys will not act violent if they were not provoked.The other side also brought in some people…the Invincible Forces and then the Bolga Boys, so violence begets violence,” he said.
However a statement from the Movement of Change, said the comments from the minister “clearly displayed that he is no lover of peace. Such an individual cannot and should not be trusted with a highly sensitive Ministry like that of the Interior.”
They claimed that his continual stay in office will only threaten the peace and stability of the nation.
“These comments from no mean a person than an Interior Minister whose core mandate is ensuring internal security, law and order is nothing but the height of irresponsibility. Is it a clear case of recipe for state sanctioned chaos and an indication of efforts by the Mahama led NDC government to institutionalize lawlessness and violence all in our electoral processes?”
“The comments are very reckless, evil and irresponsible. We therefore call on the President to dismiss him. The security of this country is not safe under a man who sees nothing-wrong electoral violence,” the statement added.
They further called on the National Peace Council and all Civil Society groups to take strong interest in this matter and condemn the Minister’s utterances “n no uncertain terms.”
