Workers under the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) have hit the streets in Tema to protest what they say is the “worsening living conditions” in the country.
According to them, government has been exploiting Ghanaians through the increases in the prices of petroleum products and increases in utility tariffs, hence their decision to demonstrate.

“They have lost the management of the economy, they are no more managing this economy. It’s is the IMF who is now dictating to us what must happen to us,” the ICU’s General Secretary Solomon Kotei told Citi News.
This year alone the cedi has depreciated in excess of 25% against the dollar.
Despite moves by government to save the cedi from further fall, it appears the local currency is still struggling to keep pace with foreign currencies.
The issue has affected general prices of good and services in the country including utility tariffs and petroleum products.
Many have mounted in previous months pressure on government to help salvage the situation before it get worse because it has adversely affected the nation’s economy.
However, in its bid to revive the economy and resuscitate the cedi, the Bank of Ghana has assured to inject $20 million dollars a day into the money market to stabilize the cedi.
Ghana is currently in a programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) aimed at saving the Ghanaian economy from further collapse.
But some economists have cast doubts about the impact of the IMF programme on Ghana’s economy.
