Tigo has once again demonstrated its commitment towards celebrating professionalism and excellence among journalists by supporting the upcoming 20th Ghana Journalists Awards.

At a short presentation ceremony in Accra, the company announced it will be sponsoring the Online category of the awards for the night and presented a cheque for GHC 10,000.

The Head of Corporate Communications and CSR, Gifty Bingley, said Tigo was excited about sponsoring that category because it is in line with their digital agenda strategy – keeping customers connected.

She said the role of the online news sources cannot be overemphasised as it is rapidly transforming access to information, irrespective of people’s location and economic circumstance. She said the challenge however was sifting through the tons of information to determine what is credible and reliable and encouraged online new sources not to sacrifice accuracy for speed.

The President of the Ghana Journalist Association, Dr. Affail Monney, commended Tigo for the kind gesture and called on corporate Ghana to support the pursuit of excellence among journalists.

“Many are those who look at our flaws and paint all of us with the same accusing brush. Yes, human we are so we have our own imperfections but our imperfections do not obscure that fact that majority of our members are doing well, they are exceling and their excellence is impacting meaningfully and positively in all dimensions of national life,” Dr. Monney said.

He disclosed that the 2015 Awards will have energy as the main focus.
