The Tema Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has impounded over 50 vehicles on the Afienya-Akosombo highway for various driving offences during its highway routine checks.

According to the MTTD, constant road checks are organized to reduce the spate of accidents on the roads.

In an interview with Citi News, the Tema Regional MTTD Commander, Chief Superintendent Oduro Amening said that although the number of accidents could not be stopped entirely, it could be reduced.

[contextly_sidebar id=”6HP1ZKbutTmnoBZE4LJfVOFNXV97lXUE”]“We can reduce it by constantly coming here to check the vehicles,” he said, “The way the accidents have been happening on the road and the rate at which people are dying, if we don’t do something, they’ll continue.”

He revealed that the vehicles had been impounded based on negligence on the part of drivers.

“Some of these offences include insecure loading, cars without reflectors and drivers driving without their driving licenses which are all dangerous to road users,” he stated, “We want to correct them before they hit the road.”

“Even somebody who had a learners driving license was arrested because he drove all the way from Ho to here (Afienya),” he remarked, “You can see that this is threatening for other road users.”

He added that those drivers whose vehicles have been impounded will be processed for court.
