The newly elected General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyapong has dismissed claims that he will work against the presidential bid of Nana Akufo-Addo.

Mr. Agyapong backed Alan Kyeremanteng for the flagbearership slot against Nana Addo in 2010.

Party rumours say he is likely to ruin Nana Addo’s ambition should the latter emerge winner in the next flagbearship race.

But his aide, David Opoku Ansah has told Citi News, his boss does not have such intentions.

“If you want one person who would want Nana Addo to be President of the land, it will be Kwabena Agyepong. That perception of he bringing an agenda and all that; let’s brush it aside.”

He said the NPP believes in the rule of law and also celebrates diversity noting that, Kwabena Agyapong “will be the referee in the next flagbearership contest so I doubt if Kwabena Agyepong will be taking sides.”

Meanwhile, an aide to Nana Addo, Mustafa Hamid has also told Citi News, if Nana Addo wins, he will work with the party’s leadership irrespective of who is in power.

He noted that Nana Addo will work hard to become the flagbearer of the NPP “and whoever is chairman or general secretary has the responsibility of working to make him President.”

He discounted assertions that Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong will actively campaign against Nana Addo “because I am sure they want us to be in power badly than Nana Addo wants us to be.”

Mr. Hamid however pointed out that Mr. Agyapong with his current position in the party can no longer be on the campaign train of Alan Kyeremanteng.

The NPP over the weekend organized their national delegates’ conference where they elected new national executives to steer the affairs of the party for a four-year term.

All incumbent executives lost their bid to retain their position with the exception of the national women’s organizer, Otiko Djaba.
