The “no verification no vote” system will be strictly enforced during the Talensi by-election on Tuesday, July 7, the Electoral Commission (EC) has said.

The EC in the Upper East Region said no exceptions will be made on the day of voting.

The Upper East Regional EC Director, James Arthur told Citi News, “the law says you must be verified before you vote and that is what the parties agreed on before the 2012 elections so we will go by it until they change the law.”

He promised that the quality of the verification machines have been improved “so we are praying that there will be no disappointments…”

Mr. Arthur added that preparations are progressing steadily and there is currently no problem.

He however expressed the hope that voting on Tuesday will be peaceful “and we hope that at the end of it, everybody will take the results in good faith.”

Background

The people of Talensi will on Tuesday head to the polls to elect a new Member of Parliament.

The seat became vacant after the sitting MP got elevated to the position of the Paramount Chief of Talensi.

Campaigning ended today with two big rallies organised by the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress.

The NPP hopes to retain the seat in the party but the NDC is determined to capture the seat.
