One of the transformers at the Achimota sub-station has been destroyed by fire.

Residents of Dzorwulu say they heard a loud explosion around 7 on Saturday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”xREVqDdVpeV0aOhjpb4umpRMyCsyITNa”]According to them, the few members of staff on site tried to fight the fire but could not because of the intensity of the blaze.

The emergency crew of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived with three fire engines to bring the fire under control.

Though the cause of the fire is unknown, the damage on the 160,000o volts power transformer has cut power supply to the eastern part of Accra.

Areas affected include Dzorwulu, Roman Ridge, Newtown, Kanda and Adenta.

The Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCO, William Amunah, has assured the affected areas that power will be restored within the shortest possible time.

Some eyewitnesses were shocked at the state of fire-fighting equipment at the premises and urged authorities to resource the place with industrial fire-fighting machines.
