The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has pulled down structures at the June 4 market near Agbogbloshie in Accra.
Citi News’ Pearl Ofori reported that the exercise began at 4am on Saturday.
The affected traders told Citi News they were not given prior notice of the demolition. Some narrated that they had to rush to the market at dawn to pack some of their wares.
The traders watched on helplessly as the bulldozers flattened their stalls, while others were seen rummaging through the debris to see what they could salvage.
The demolition was supervised by the personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.
The assembly has carried out a number of demolitions on the banks of the Odaw River and the Korle Lagoon to make way for the dredging and desilting of the two water bodies.
The exercises were sanctioned following the devastating June 3 floods and fire which claimed over 150 lives and destroyed properties worth millions of Ghana cedis.
Since the demolitions began, the AMA has faced stiff opposition from some government officials and residents of Old Fadama who were the worst affected.
Some of the displaced persons who were mostly from the three regions of the north have since returned to their home regions.
