What started as a holiday rendezvous for an Accra based couple and their friends turned out to be a tragic event that the newly wedded wife would never forget in life.
Thirty-six year old Selasi Deku, who is a banker and a resident of East Legon, a suburb of Accra, met his untimely death at the Boti Falls, a famous tourist site in the Yilo Krobo Municpality of the Eastern Region on Wednesday, July, 1, 2015.
The tragedy occurred when he attempted to rescue his wife with whom he had travelled with to the place to celebrate the Republic Day, from drowning in the Boti River.
Snippets of information gathered by this paper indicate that the late Deku tied the knot with his better half barely three months ago and the couple visited the Boti Falls as part of their honeymoon celebration.
The wife decided to swim with some friends she met at the falls but moments after she jumped into the river, the deceased (husband) saw his newly wedded wife being carried away by the river.
Seeing the wife almost drowning, the husband jumped into the river to save her, but he rather got drowned, while his wife was rather saved by some good Samaritans.
After a few hours of searching, the deceased was retrieved by divers from a nearby village.
An eyewitness who spoke to The Chronicle on condition of anonymity indicated that Selasi and his wife together with some friends travelled from East Legon in the Greater Accra region to enjoy themselves on the Republic Day at the Boti Falls.
The body has since been deposited at the Koforidua Central Government morgue for autopsy.
In another development, a 14-year-old boy has also sustained a brian injury while many others suffered various degrees of injuries when they fell from the Bunso Arboretun Canopy walkway.
The Republic Day holiday revelers, numbering 21 were confirmed to have sustained various degrees of injuries when they fell from the Bunsu Canopy walkway in the East Akyem District of the Eastern region.
Sixteen victims were sent to the Hawa Memorial Hospital at Osiem.
It is unclear what might have caused the incident but some observers attributed it to the fact that the wieght of the users might have outweighed the strength of the walkway.
Reports from the various hospitals indicate that both victims are responding to treatment.
The 320 meter long canopy walkway was constructed with assistance from those who constructed the Kakum National Park in the Central Region two years ago by a private developer,under the arrangement with government that sought to bring more tourists to the region.
The Bunso Aboretum Forest Reserve Eco-system is managed by the Plant Genetic Resource Research Institute (PGRRI) of the Centre for Scientific and Indutrial Research (CSIR).
The Eastern Regional Police Command, which confirmed both incidents, told the media that investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
