President John Dramani Mahama has visited victims that were affected by last Saturday’s flood in Kumasi.

Five persons reportedly died and many properties were destroyed by the flood, which hit Aboabo and its surrounding areas.

Though the cause of the flood has established,  some angry youth in Aboabo took to the streets blaming the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly for the destruction.

They further demanded that a bridge connecting the community to the central business district be reconstructed to prevent further flooding in the future.

President Mahama speaking to residents at Aboabo on Tuesday sent his condolences to the bereaved families.

“If you will remember, in Accra a similar situation occured and a lot of properties were destroyed. Our investigations revealed that the drains had been taken over by sand and other materials. We are currently dredging the drains in the affected areas. When I came here, I realized that its the same problem that happened in Kumasi. So when I go back to Accra, I will let them bring the dredging equipment to Kumasi so that the drains will be desilted to allow for free flow of water,” he added.

President Mahama said he has directed the Ministry of Works and Housing to undertake a feasibility study on the bridge “in order that we can construct a bigger one that will allow water to pass under it.”
